Leaders need to be life long learners

Posted: May 27, 2011 in Uncategorized

Proverbs 1:5 states “A wise man will hear and increase learning…”  I am living this verse as I am back in school now…yes, at the age of 41 with four kids, a full-time ministry position, and a plethora of other things going…I’m back in school…seminary to be exact.  It’s mostly online, so my school day starts about 9:00 p.m. each evening and goes to about midnight.  Why you ask?  It is about leadership.  Leaders require so much training, so much seasoning, so much learning to be effective.  Leadership experts Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus made a discovery about the relationship between growth and leadership: “It is the capacity to develop and improve their skills that distinguishes leaders from their followers.”  So the point is that leadership requires life-long learning.  Banking on past accomplishments and becoming complacent in the “here and now” is a leadership disaster in the making.  What new things are you learning?
