Political thoughts…

As I watch the media debate about how our current government leaders are “stacking up” against previous leaders, I think it is important for Christ followers to enter this conversation with a Biblical world view.  As I have studied through the books of 1 and 2 Kings, it has occurred to me that the importance of a leader’s spiritual condition is far more important than their political or financial positions.  Consider the two kings who achieved the greatest success in bringing political and economic prosperity to the northern kingdom of Israel, Omri and Jeroboam II.  These two kings are discussed only briefly; Omri’s reign is discussed in 1 Kings 16:16-19; Jeroboam II’s reign is discussed in 2 Kings 14:16, 23-29. But in stark contrast, kings who led reform movements (such as Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah), are given prominence in the scriptures.  These kings were guiding people to God, reviving a nation, and tearing down the sinful idols that were drawing people away from God.   These kings’ spiritual achievements were far more important than any economic, political, or military achievements. Each of these kings were evaluated according to the standard of God’s law.  I think we all need to realize that our spiritual condition is far more important than any political or financial matter.  I pray that our current leaders can take heed to the wisdom in Proverbs 14:34 that says, “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people”.
